Saitama Medical University International Medical Center strives to enhance multilingual communication and a patient-friendly hospital environment for our international patients, including people on business trips, overseas students, sightseers, visitors for medical stays, and people residing in Japan. We aim to provide safe and reliable, world-class specialized medical services. In addition, we are dedicated to establishing a system that respects cultural and religious differences.


Multilingual Languages Services

Our website is available in over 100 languages with the Google Translate.
The hospital floor guide is written in Japanese, English, Chinese, and Korean.
Some medical questionnaires and consent forms are also available in English and Chinese.


Remote Medical Interpreting Services

We offer 24/7 language support services, free of charge, for patients and family members with limited Japanese proficiency. Interpreting services through mobile devices are available at each reception desk. Interpreting services are also available using the hospital’s iPhones, which our doctors and nurses use. Please feel free to ask us if you need interpreting services. Our remote medical interpreting services are available in over 20 languages.


Risk of using a non-professional medical interpreter in consultations

We strongly recommend that you use a qualified medical interpreter for your consultations. A non-professional interpreter is more likely to make errors due to a lack of medical knowledge and medical terminology. We suggest to use a designated medical interpreting services for your consultations even though you are accompanied by an interpreter arranged by yourself or someone who understands your language and Japanese.


Medical Coordinator for International Patients

Medical coordinators for international patients who have completed training by
the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare provide international patients support throughout their hospital visit, including check-in procedures, examinations, consultations, and accounting.

We have been successfully accredited several third-party certificates.

We have been accredited by the JCI since 2015.

Japan Medical Service Accreditation for International Patients (JMIP)

JMIP is a certification system that evaluates medical institution’s capability of accepting international patients based on the following five criteria; acceptance system, patient services, medical services operations, organizational framework and management, and efforts for improvement, proving safe and reliable medical services for international patients. As of February 3rd, 2024, 45 medical institutions nationwide have been accredited.

Japan International Hospitals (JIH)

JIH is a certification system that evaluates medical institution’s capability of accepting medical travelers to Japan based on their process and performance for diagnosis and treatment. We have been accredited as a member of “Japan International Hospitals” by Medical Excellence JAPAN (MEJ).


Base Hospital for Accepting International Patients

Base hospitals for accepting international patients are medical institutions designated by prefectural government considering regional healthcare system. We have been certified as a base hospital accepting international patients in Saitama prefecture due to the quality of our international patient services, such as 24/7 language support services. The list of base hospitals for accepting international patients is available on the website of the Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) and translated in multiple languages. The Ministry of Heath, Labour and Welfare and the Japan Tourism Agency have been working together on the list since 2019.

Consultation Guide for International Patients

① International Patients Living or Staying Longer Term in Japan

  • All clinical departments, except for the emergency center, require a referral letter and appointment for new patients. Please ask your primary doctor for a referral letter written in Japanese or English, and make an appointment through our appointment center at 042-984-0476. The call center hours are 8:30am to 5pm, Monday to Saturday.
  • You will be asked to submit your Japanese health insurance card and identification card, such as a residence card or passport, at your first visit to the reception desk.
  • If you do not have a Japanese health insurance card, you will need to pay for 160% of your medical expenses. The cost could be expensive. Therefore, we will need to make a copy of your credit card information.

※ NOTE
We do not accept any form of oversea travel insurance. You will need to pay the whole medical expenses in cash or credit card first and then make a claim with your oversea travel insurance company by yourself.


② International Patients Visiting in Japan for Medical Stays

For international patients residing abroad and seeking treatment in Japan without a Japanese health insurance card: in principle, our medical services are offered only through medical travel assistance companies and guarantors in order to provide smooth and safe medical services. Please contact the following medical travel assistance companies and guarantors first. We do not directly accept and make an appointment for the international patients visiting in Japan for medical stays. Please note that we may not accept your request even though you seek a treatment in the hospital through medical travel assistance companies and guarantors.

Medical travel assistance companies and guarantors provide medical coordination services such as serving as a coordinator for the host medical institution, serving as a payment agent for medical expenses, providing interpretation and translation services, making arrangements for transportation and accommodation, and providing 24/7 hotline services.
※Coordination costs will be borne by the patient.
