In the Department of Radiation Oncology, we treat malignant tumor using radiation therapy which is one of the three pillars of cancer treatment.
Saitama Medical University International Medical Center is one of the best radiotherapy facilities in Japan, equipped with the most advanced precision external irradiation equipment in the world, as well as a brachytherapy device with high dose rate iridium and permanently inserted I-125. By making full use of these therapeutic devices, it became possible to irradiate tumors with high doses while keeping low dose of radiation to normal tissues around the tumor. As a result, side effects on normal tissues can be alleviated and tumor control can be improved as compared with conventional methods. With combination use of such high-precision radiation therapy with surgery and chemotherapy (anticancer drug treatment), safe and effective treatments have been performed even for cases with progressed conditions, treatment outcomes have been clearly improved.
And radiation therapy is the only curative treatment for elderly people and complicated patients who are difficult to undergo surgery and chemotherapy, and its role has been increasing in recent years.
