Department of Head and Neck Oncology
Medical services and specialties
Our department is the second established specializing in head and neck surgery in Japan in July 2005. We respond to all tumorous diseases excluding brain tumor and spinal cord tumor, etc. on clavicle from upper mediastinum. Since head and neck cancer develops from the region closely related to everyday communication functions, it is important to preserve functions such as voice and swallowing as well as maintenance of life in the treatment. We actively provide treatment in collaboration with the Departments of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Radiation Oncology, and Medical Oncology. Based on surgical treatment, we select radiotherapy (which may be combined with chemotherapy) depending on the type, nature and degree of progression of the tumor. In surgical treatment, we take a policy to try to preserve function and morphology as much as possible when reconstructing the tumor excised site under joint medical examination system with the departments of Ear, Nose and Throat, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.
In addition, for advanced and recurrent cancer, jointly with the Department of Brain Surgery, we combine treatments such as skull base surgery, reconstructive surgery, super selective infusion therapy, CyberKnife radiosurgery and the like, seeking the best treatment according to the condition.
Since April 2015, we have established the specialized outpatient clinic of thyroid cancer.
Target diseases
Oral tumor mainly centering on laryngeal tumor, upper / middle / lower pharyngeal tumor, tongue tumor, nose / paranasal sinus tumor such as maxillary tumor, salivary gland tumor such as ear / temporal bone tumor, thyroid tumor, parotid and submandibular gland, etc.
The number of new patients exceeds 600 cases per year. Early detection of head and neck cancers could achieve not only good treatment results but also functional preservation.
